Curriculum & Grading System
Curriculum The Archdiocesan curriculum for students in kindergarten through grade eight is based on the national standards in each discipline. Teachers strive to address diverse learning styles and use the latest educational technology to enhance their lessons. The format centers on grade level appropriate mastery of reading and writing skills, math, science, social studies and religion. Additionally, each student participates in physical education, music, art, Spanish and technology applications. Students receive daily instruction in the Catholic faith and the Principles of Catholic Social Teaching are infused across the curriculum. Monthly mass, daily community prayer and a strong commitment to community service are integral parts of the IHM experience. IHM School also offers many opportunities beyond the desk. Students have the opportunity to gain knowledge through: hands-on projects; field trips; research reports; academic competitions; student government; geography, spelling and Spanish Bees; and a variety of other interesting ways. Grading System In grades three through eight, grades are recorded in our computerized grading system, Power Grade and Power School. Parents are strongly encouraged to use the Parent Access component to this system to keep track of their child’s progress. To obtain an access code, parents may call the school office or send an e-mail to Mrs. Jennings at: mjennings@immaculateheartofmary.com Parents should contact the teacher if they are in need of help or information concerning grades. Each teacher can be e mailed by using first initial, lastname@immaculateheartofmary.com or by leaving a message with the school office. For grades 3-8, the school will issue a reminder for parents to check parent access carefully at interim time. Printed reports will go home only to students who are in danger of doing poorly in a subject area for the trimester. For grades 1 and 2, printed interim reports are provided. Progress Reports are distributed three times a year. A Progress Report will match the grades on Power School. Grades include assessments that were given during the trimester. Codes in use for Power School: EX – exempt or excused. Student does not need to complete assignment. AB – student was absent when the assignment was collected. NHI – the assignment was not handed in (student was present when the assignment was collected.) M – medical R – Redo. Assignment was returned to the student to redo and the student has not handed it back to the teacher. |
